3rd Grade

Grade 3 Curriculum Overview

Language Arts: How can I read for understanding? How can I express myself through my writing? Third graders will focus on a number of reading skills such as checking for understanding, climbing the hurdle of new words, and making meaningful predictions. Third grade writers will be able to tell a story bit by bit and teach others through their writing.

Mathematics: How can I solve problems using four operations? Third graders will add, subtract, multiply, and divide within 100. They will solve word problems using these four operations. Your child will also learn fractions and measurement.

Science: How can I think like an engineer and a scientist? Third graders will learn about engineering, weather and patterns, motion and matter, life cycles and inherited traits, and fossils. By using a hands-on based approach, your child will deepen their science understanding and make discoveries.

Social Studies: What does it mean to be a citizen of New Jersey? This year your child will learn about the different types of communities and how their formation shaped the history of the United States.

Meet Our Third Grade Teachers:

Hi, I am Katherine Cascioli, a third-grade teacher at Troy Hills Elementary School.   After obtaining a degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Special Education from East Stroudsburg University, I eagerly began my career as a fifth-grade teacher.  I couldn’t believe I’d be teaching in the same room I had spent my third-grade year as a student! I was thrilled to return home to THS, the very place that inspired me to become a teacher! After sixteen years in fifth grade, I began teaching third grade in 2011.  No matter the grade, I believe in setting high expectations while nurturing and guiding students to reach and exceed them. This creates a classroom family of lifelong learners who will then nurture, encourage and support on another. Every former student knows my motto, “Once a Cascioli kid, a Cascioli kid for life!”

Hello! I am Melissa Covello and I am a 3rd grade teacher here at Troy Hills Elementary School. My life-long pursuit to be an elementary classroom teacher started to become a reality at Seton Hall University where I earned my BS Degrees in Elementary Education and Communication. After graduation, I joined the TH family as a kindergarten para in September 2000. The following year I began teaching my own 4th grade class at Troy Hills and spent 3 years in that grade level. Then I taught second grade for 17 years. I joined the 3rd grade in September 2021. I love to see my students enjoy school. I enjoy getting to know their individual personalities. Watching them grow and become more independent learners by the end of the school year is a privilege. Away from the classroom, I enjoy altruistic activities in my hometown and in Parsippany as a sister of Alpha Delta Kappa- an International Honorary Organization for Women Educators. My other passions are dogs, Disney, and family!
